Establishment history At the General Meeting of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences on June 30, 2014, a decision was made on the establishment of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology on the basis of the Department of Fundamental Problems of Biological Productivity of the Institute of Botany of ANAS and the institute began its independent activity since July 1, 2016. The Department of Fundamental Problems of Biological Productivity was founded in 1971 by professor Jalal Aliyev and started operating as a group. In 1974 this group became the Laboratory of Molecular Bases of Bioenergetics under the sector of Physicochemical Biology. In 1983 the Laboratory of Molecular-Genetic Bases of Production Processes was created on its base, which included creative groups of Biochemistry of Photosynthesis, Genetic Engineering, Molecular Organization of Photosynthetic Apparatus, Tissue Culture, Photochemistry of Chloroplasts and Photobiotechnology. At the end of 1988, Biochemistry of Photosynthesis, Genetic Engineering, Molecular Organization of Photosynthetic Apparatus, Tissue Culture and Artificial Climate groups became independent laboratories. On the base of these laboratories, including the creative groups of Photochemistry of Chloroplasts and Photobiotechnology, Department of Molecular-Genetic Bases of Production Processes was created at the Institute of Botany. Four new laboratories were established in 2005-2010 and its name changed to the Department of Fundamental Problems of Biological Productivity. Two international laboratories were established under the department in 2012. Currently, 3 departments, 5 international laboratories are operating at the institute. The number of employees is 112, including 59 researchers, 1 academic, 3 correspondent members of ANAS, 3 doctors of sciences and professors, 23 PhDs in biology. Master students are trained in 3 specialties (molecular biology, biotechnology and biochemistry).   
Basic activity directions  The study of molecular mechanisms of electrochemical and metabolic transformations of solar energy in photosynthesis; the evaluation of molecular mechanisms of plant tolerance to abiotic and biotic factors; comparative study of the organization and expression of eukaryotic genomes; refinement and validation of macromolecular structures; elucidation of ways to solve problems of agriculture and human health using methods of molecular biology and cell biotechnology.  
Main scientific achievements  For the first time the enzyme carbonic anhydrase of plant origin was crystallized functional-structural organization of the enzyme was studied comprehensively and molecular model of the quaternary structure of the enzyme was proposed;

Topographic model of the pigment-protein complexes in tylakoid membranes of higher plants was proposed and molecular-genetic mechanisms of their formation and assembly was elucidated;

Contrary to ideas on wastefulness of photorespiration existing in the world science for a long time, experiments performed with contrasting genotypes grown under field conditions confirmed that photorespiration is one of the important metabolic processes formed during evolution and attempts of reducing photorespiration for increasing plant productivity are unsubstantiated;

Genomic library of chloroplast DNA was created, vector systems were constructed for transferring alien genes into plants and transgenic plants were obtained;

For the first time in Azerbaijan nicleotide sequence of citS gene encoding malate/citrate simporter protein was established using the "Chromosome walking" method and a new Nested PCR method was developed to determine the Stolbur group (XII). For the first time, various isolates of the 'Ca. P. solani' species endemic for Europe and the Mediterranean area were detected. For the first time in Azerbaijan interspecies recombination was found for phytoplasmas of fruit (pear) trees;

For the first time in Azerbaijan as a result of sequence analysis of 16S ribosome gene 'Candidatus Phytoplasma solani' was detected in grape plants and it was found to cause the dangerous disease "Bois noir";

During combined investigations of wild and cultural leguminous plants in several Europe countries, a new nanovirus - Black medic leaf roll virus (BMLRV) was identified in chickpea plants gathered in Ganja and its complete genome was sequenced. As a result of the complete sequencing of five isolates of Faba bean necrotic yellow virus (FBNYV) in bean from Azerbaijan and Spain and four isolates of Faba bean necrotic stunt virus (FBNSV) in chickpea, pea, lentils and bean plants from Azerbaijan, FBNSV was identified in Europe for the first time;

New specific RAPD primers were established for the identification of 3Eb and 6Eb chromosomes of the wild cereals Thinopyrum bessarabicum having Eb genome; Adaptation mechanisms of wheat to water deficiency were determined based on the levels of formation of free radicals during the all phases of ontogenesis of wheat plants cultivated under soil drought conditions, antioxidant defense systems, structural-functional state of photosynthetic membranes and evaluation of tolerance potential using molecular markers;

TSSPlant computer program for searching plant RNT polimerase II promotors having 20% higher accuracy compared with existing programs was created and given to free use of researchers http://www.cbrc.kaust.edu.sa/download/;

Biotechnological propagation method was developed which allows obtaining 10-25 saffron (Crocus sativus L.) microbulbs in one tube under in vitro conditions;

Morphogenetic properties of the Shirvan-Shah grape variety cultivated under artificial conditions were studied during microclonal propagation, various cultivation conditions were elucidated in relation to trophic factors, and a high infection degree with pathogens of viral nature was established.
